Before 15 March 1989, Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran was known as Jabatan Parit dan Taliair which incorporated on first Januaru 1932 for fullfuilling the demands on irrigation and drainage which was handled by Jabatan Kerja Raya before. Incorporation of JPS is one of the government effort in encouraging paddy plantation as the nation will not depends on imported rice.
